Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced today that he and his wife Priscilla Chan are donating $ 25 million to the Centers for Disease Control to help fight the Ebola epidemic that’s already claimed thousands of lives in West Africa.
“The Ebola epidemic is at a critical turning point,” Zuckerberg wrote in a status update this morning. “We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn’t spread further and become a long term global health crisis.”
“We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome…We are hopeful this will save lives and get this outbreak under control.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time the 30-year-old media mogul has astonished the world with his generosity. In 2012, Zuckerberg donated $ 500 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation a charitable organization that serves a wide variety of people in need.
Most of Zuckerberg’s latest contribution will go to Ebola response efforts in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
The donation comes on the heels of the news that Texas resident Nina Pham has become the first American to be infected by the deadly virus without traveling abroad.
Pham is an ER nurse who contracted the disease while treating Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient to die in the United States.
